Artistic Profile

Joyce Burkholder has been a full-time professional artist for 40 years. She began her career as a textile artist in 1970, and in 1980 started painting, first on silk, and has since evolved to include watercolours, oils and acrylics to portray her prize-winning mystical landscapes of local Algonquin scenery. Joyce's skilled use of glazing with many layers of thin, slightly transparent paint produce the subtle and sometimes dramatic lighting effects on canvas she is so well known for.

Her passion is painting outdoors on location in all seasons, also producing more painstaking and detailed work in her rural studio. Joyce Burkholder owned and operated the Wilno Garden Gallery, a successful studio, gallery and custom picture frame shop and now paints and exhibits in her home studio/showroom Hillside Paintings and Pottery with partner and potter Dan Hill, and offers Adventure Painting Workshops.

Both Joyce's surrounding perennial garden and the stunning scenic landscape nearby continually inspire her vigorous creativity, the source of her internationally collected and award-winning paintings.

Artist's Statement

Most of my paintings are done "en plein air", or in other words, outdoor on location. Painting outdoors presents various challenges: hot sun, rain, cold, bugs etc, but also allows me an opportunity to produce my freshest and perhaps most spontaneous paintings. Indeed, one has to be spontaneous because in time, the light angle will have changed, the wind may have blown the easel over, or the sun will have dried the paper and so on.

To me, the idea is to get the "feeling" of the scene: to paint the sound of the birds, the heat of the sun, the bite of the cold…the experience of being there.
